Meet Your Directors!

 

Mr. Daniel J. Singer is the Director of Bands at Oshkosh West High School. His duties include team teaching concert bands, conducting the pit orchestra for the annual musical theater production, directing jazz band, and events outside of the school day such as marching band and pep band. He also performs as a member of Vento Winds and Wisconsin Symphonic Winds and has performed with the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra, the Fox Cities Swing Band, Oshkosh Area Community Band, , and other area ensembles. Mr. Singer has taught at OWHS since the fall of 2007 and has been teaching band in Wisconsin since 2000.

A native of Kenosha, WI, he is a 2000 Graduate of UW-Platteville (BS in Instrumental Music Education) and a 2011 Graduate of VanderCook College of Music (Masters of Music Education).In August of 2011, he graduated with his Master's Degree in Music Education from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois. For his master's thesis project Mr. Singer wrote a method book for teaching Jazz Ensemble titled Warm-ups, Etudes, and Daily Drills for the Large Jazz Ensemble at the Advanced Level.

Mr. Singer was a staff member for the 2010 Wisconsin Ambassadors of Music tour of Europe. He performed with the band on trumpet and was sectional coach for the bass clarinets and bassoons. This group is made up of music students from all over Wisconsin who were nominated by their school music teacher. Every two years they travel to Europe for a performing tour that includes: England, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany.

Mr. Singer is a member of several professional organizations, including: American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA), National Band Association (NBA), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), Wisconsin Music Educators Association (WMEA), International Trumpet Guild (ITG), Wisconsin Concert Band Association (WCBA), and is an alumni of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Professional Music Fraternity and the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps.

Some of Mr. Singer’s interests and hobbies include: home improvement projects, yard work, instrument repair and modification, listening to jazz, Milwaukee Brewers baseball, Green Bay Packers football, and spending time with his family including his wife, son, daughter, and two dogs.

Mr. Brian K. Wilson is Associate Director of Bands at Oshkosh West High School. At West he works with all aspects of one of Wisconsin's largest band programs, co-teaching four concert bands, the Summer Marching Band, pep bands, and chamber ensembles totaling nearly 200 students.

Prior to teaching at Oshkosh West High School, Mr. Wilson taught at Hobart Middle School in Hobart, Indiana. Working as a long-term substitute band director, he taught 6th and 7th grade general music classes, a beginning percussion class, a beginning flute, clarinet and oboe class and co-taught the 7th and 8th grade bands. While at Hobart, he also worked with the high school marching band and served as show designer and arranger for the 2011 marching season. After his work at HMS, Mr. Wilson was hired as an adjunct band director at Valparaiso High School in Valparaiso, Indiana. At VHS, he worked with the directors to prepare three concert bands for state concert band contest, where the Wind Ensemble placed tenth in the state.

Mr. Wilson graduated from Indiana State University in May of 2010. At Indiana State he was a percussion principle and performed with the Wind Orchestra, Symphonic Band, University Symphony, Percussion Ensemble, Marching Band and Basketball Band, serving as drum major in the fall of 2008 and co-principal percussionist in the Wind Orchestra. While in college, Mr. Wilson was the percussion director, taught the front ensemble and assisted with the curricular percussion class at Terre Haute North Vigo High School in addition to arranging the marching percussion music. He gave lessons at the both THN and the ISU Community Music Center. Mr. Wilson is a brother of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Service Fraternity and Pi Kappa Lambda, National Honor Music Society. He currently performs with Vento Winds in the Fox Valley.

In July of 2017, Mr. Wilson graduated with a Master of Music Education degree from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois. As part of his studies, he successfully completed multiple courses in band, choral, and jazz arranging in addition to coursework in advanced instrumental techniques. He also wrote a series of three rhythm method books utilizing audiation and Bloom's taxonomy titled Rhythm Drills: A Practical Method for Rhythm Mastery.

He was a marching member of the Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from 2005 to 2009. He served as drum major for his final two seasons before aging out in 2009. Between 2010 and 2013, Mr. Wilson has served as Assistant Director of the Pioneer, coordinating rehearsals, staff, housing and travel.

Brian strongly believes in the performance of new works. He has commissioned works by Rick Kirby, Charles Rochester Young, Oshkosh West Alumnus Nicolás Gutiérrez, Elena Avalos-Bock, Brandon Nelson, and Randall Standridge. Additionally, he often composes, arranges, and edits music for concert and marching ensembles. His music is published through Jalen publishing.

In his spare time, Mr. Wilson enjoys traveling, technology, attending concerts and spending time with his husband, Joe, friends, and family.
