After earning a Jazz Performance degree from UW-Stevens Point (2017), Malakai has shared the stage at music festivals, concert halls, and venues throughout Wisconsin, the Midwest, and the country. His performance career spans Jazz ensembles, Pop-Rock-Country bands, Funk/R&B groups, pit orchestras and more—bringing a diverse musical background to his teaching. Among his favorite performances are Summerfest, WI State Fair, Welcome Home/ Sweet Seasons (Carole King Tribute) and Mercury (Queen/ Freddie Mercury Tribute) national tours, Lambeau Field, American Family Field, Rock/ Country USA, Mile of Music & WaterFest.
In addition to his private teaching studio and his work with Appleton Music Academy (2017-Present), Malakai served as a band clinician for the Kimberly School District during the 2022–2023 school year. That experience reignited his passion for music education and led him to pursue a Music Education degree that he completed in May of 2025. Malakai believes that music education creates well-rounded, emotionally intelligent individuals. Music is a deeply personal and profoundly human experience, and Malakai’s teaching philosophy centers on adaptability, independence, and the cultivation of lifelong musicianship.
“In all that I do, I strive to foster a love of music that endures beyond my classroom. By meeting students where they are, encouraging them to think creatively and independently, and giving them meaningful tools for expression, I hope to cultivate not just musicians, but confident and curious individuals.”
“I’m so thrilled to be a part of the amazing music team at Oshkosh West High School and Carl Traeger Middle School! Let’s make it a great year!”
When he's not teaching, Malakai enjoys traveling, spending time outdoors with his dog, playing disc golf, and making music with friends.
