Make Up Procedures

Each performance is a demonstration of musical skills by the students. Since band is a class, and performances are a part of the learning process as well as graded public demonstrations of skills learned, attendance, and participation at each performances is expected, required, and graded.

Make-up assignments should be done outside of a student’s band class periods.

Football Pep Band

All band students must perform at all assigned Football Pep Band performances.

Students who miss a Football Pep Band performance due to other school activity (clubs, athletics, etc.) must fill out the online Pep Band Conflict Form before the missed performance to be excused from their band obligations for that event. Our athletic director states that performances supersede practices. The same is true the other way around — games/matches/meets/etc. supersede band practices. With that said, coaches aren't allowed to hold this against students in any way, especially by reducing playing time. If this is an issue, please let the directors or Mr. Jodarski know and we can work it out with the coach.

If the Pep Band Performance that was missed was Pre-Game Only:

Option 1: Spend one hour (60 minutes) helping the band directors organize, file music, sort music, complete inventory, or basic tasks around the band room. This can be done in 20- or 30-minute chunks until the time is made up. This satisfies the community service aspect of pep band performances.

Option 2: Perform with accuracy, your instrument’s parts for 5 pep band tunes of your choosing for the band directors. Schedule a time with the directors for this option. Generally, before school, after school, and lunch times will work best.

If the Pep Band Performance that was missed was Pre-Game and Halftime:

Option 1: Spend two hours (120 minutes) helping the band directors organize, file music, sort music, complete inventory, or basic tasks around the band room. This can be done in 20- or 30-minute chunks until the time is made up. This satisfies the community service aspect of pep band performances.

Option 2: Perform with accuracy, your instrument’s parts for 10 pep band tunes of your choosing for the band directors. Schedule a time with the directors for this option. Generally, before school, after school, and lunch times will work best.

If the Homecoming Performances Were Missed:

Option 1: Spend two hours (120 minutes) helping the band directors organize, file music, sort music, complete inventory, or basic tasks around the band room. This can be done in 20- or 30-minute chunks until the time is made up. This satisfies the community service aspect of pep band and parade performances.

Option 2: Perform with accuracy, your instrument’s parts for 5 pep band tunes of your choosing and the parade tune from memory for the band directors. Schedule a time with the directors for this option. Generally, before school, after school, and lunch times will work best.

Parade Performance

If a student misses a parade performance for any reason, they will perform the music from the missed performance for the band directors and a group of at least five other students of the performing student's choosing in order to demonstrate the skills that would be demonstrated at the live performance. If multiple students in the same band are missing from the performance, they may play as a small ensemble.

In addition, students must make up the time missed (2 hours) by practicing in the band room or helping the band directors organize, file music, sort music, complete inventory, or basic tasks around the band room. This can be done in 20- or 30-minute chunks until the time is made up. This satisfies the community service aspect of parade performances.

Students and/or parents should notify the directors before missing a performance and should schedule a make-up performance time with the band directors as soon as they return to school after the missed performance. The district policy for students turning in make-up work after an absence is 2 days for each day absent.

Concert Performance

If a student misses a concert performance for any reason, they will perform the music from the missed performance for the band directors and a group of at least five other students of the performing student's choosing in order to demonstrate the skills that would be demonstrated at the live performance. Music must be performed as if it were at the concert, including any aleatoric portions, singing, or other non-standard sections. Students/parents should notify the directors before missing a performance and should schedule a make-up performance time with the band directors as soon as they return to school after the missed performance. The district policy for students turning in make-up work after an absence is 2 days for each day absent.
