Winter Band Concerts — February 8 and 10, 2022, at 7:30pm
Our midwinter concerts are almost upon us! Wildcat and Concert Bands will perform on Tuesday, February 8th. Varsity Band and Wind Ensemble will perform on Thursday, February 10th. The students have been working hard and are excited to showcase what they have learned so far this year. You will certainly notice significant growth! Below is some pertinent information for the concert.
Call time is 6:30pm. Students should be at West in their concert attire with their instruments assembled at 6:30pm.
The auditorium seating area will open at 7:15pm. Please do not arrive earlier than 7:15 as the auditorium won’t be open until 15 minutes before the concert. Those who arrive early can wait in the lobby.
Concert time is 7:30pm. Each concert should be less than 45 minutes.
Concert dress is as follows:
Men and students issued a tuxedo will wear their school-provided tuxedo jacket, pants, bow tie, and cummerbund. They must also provide their own clean, white button-down shirt with a collar. The shirt can be either long or short sleeve, as they will be covered by the jacket. Men should also wear long black socks and all-black shoes.
All other students should wear all black. This provides some options, but please be sure to choose something that is dressier and will go with the tuxedos. Options might include a black blouse, a black button-down shirt, a black skirt that extends below the knees, black pants, or a simple black dress. Shoes must be all-black, but socks are not required.
Students with financial difficulties should contact Mr. Singer or Mr. Wilson for assistance as soon as possible. We can help, but we need time to plan. Students who come to the concert without proper concert attire may not be able to perform.
Concert Attire Donations
For our fall concert, we had a record number of students who did not arrive in the proper attire. Luckily, we had enough shirts and shoes to give out, but our spare items are nearly gone at this point.
We are looking to create a “closet” of items to distribute to students in need for our upcoming performances. These items can be new or gently used. We are in need of all-black shoes, men’s white button-down shirts, black dress pants, and ladies’ dressier black tops for concert performances. If you have anything that you would like to donate please have your student bring them to West. Thank you for your consideration!
WSMA Festival Performances
In May each band will travel by coach bus to Carroll University in Waukesha to perform in a Wisconsin School Music Association Large Group contest. The Wildcat and Concert Bands will travel on May 12, and Varsity Band and Wind Ensemble will travel on May 13. We will take coach buses to Shattuck Auditorium to perform and conclude the day with a visit to the Great Wolf Lodge in Gurnee, Illinois. A page dedicated to these trips (with tentative itineraries) can be found here.
While at the Great Wolf Lodge, all students will have access to an awesome arcade! Additionally, students will be able to choose either the waterpark or the dry attractions, including unlimited use of mini-golf, bowling, ropes course, and a rock-climbing wall. For students choosing the waterpark and arcade, the cost of the trip will be $75 (coach bus travel and waterpark access). For students choosing the dry attractions, the cost of the trip will be $60 (coach bus travel and dry attraction access). For students only interested in the arcade, the cost of the trip will be $35 (coach bus travel). While at the Great Wolf Lodge, there are two restaurants offering burgers, chicken tenders, and pizza at student cost. The facility is cashless currently. If students don’t have access to a card or mobile pay, we can purchase meal cards when we arrive.
All students will attend and a fundraising opportunity will be available to help with the cost (see below). Students with financial difficulties should contact Mr. Singer or Mr. Wilson for assistance.
For Students in Multiple Bands
We have many students who participate in multiple bands during the school day. Those students are encouraged to perform with each of the bands they rehearse with while at the festival. As a thank you to our students in multiple bands across the 2 days, the second day will be free (equal or lesser value).
Remaining Pep Band Performances
In typical years, we perform at eighth basketball games: 4 in first semester and 4 in second semester. We canceled the first two in first semester to ease student schedules for Band-o-Rama. Our final basketball pep band of the school year was scheduled for February 18th, but we are canceling that due to the district adding a much-needed mental health break on February 17-20. To keep the number of performances equitable between the two bands, we are also canceling the final blue band performance on February 11th. As such, our final basketball pep band performance of the school year will be on February 1st.
